The Simplest Way To Sell & Shop

19 Oct 11

Although I understand the wonderful world of Twitter, I would probably have to claim novice over expert. Which is why I find things like this website by Sell Simply even more intriguing. They’ve taken something many people are already comfortable with in the social media scene and twisted it to be something new and useful. Simply put, they “turn Tweets into transactions.”

Not only do they have a new and innovative idea, they’ve created it in a very organized and user friendly environment. They’ve looked at the target, studied how the medium can help them, and implemented it. Plus they are versatile. You can shop via Twitter or their website, and listing can be done with them or imported from other online places. Sellers tweet the item, price and picture for anyone to see, and if you want to make the purchase simply reply all with the word “buy.” And since it’s Twitter you can easily follow sellers you like and search for new listed items.

Storify, Social Media And The Stolen Laptop

24 May 11

My new favorite social media discovery is Storify. In their own words: “Storify is a way to tell stories using social media such as Tweets, photos and videos. You search multiple social networks from one place, and then drag individual elements into your story. You can re-order the elements and also add text to give context to your readers.”

So why am I blogging about this today? Because I just had to share with you this Storify.

I felt like I was watching a real time cops and robbers movie and I am simply amazed that all the material is via tweet. Check out the curated story, tweet by tweet, of the guy who used social media to recover his stolen laptop.

Note: Due to the nature of Storify, including actual tweets from real people, you may see some strong language. Parental discretion advised.

Lessons From The Disgruntled Flight Attendant

10 Aug 10

I wanted this blog post to be quirky and awesome. Then I started writing it.

It’s hard not to be intrigued by the headlines, Tweets and Facebook status updates about the JetBlue flight attendant who “exited” his job by sliding down the emergency evacuation slide. Oh yeah. And he grabbed a beer on the way out.

But on second glance, upon digging deeper and reading the actual story, I don’t see the new most interesting man in the world. I see someone so desperately unhappy that he risked the safety and peace of mind of airline passengers, in order to pacify himself in a very heated moment. A moment that was clearly not the first moment he’d decided he was close to the edge. I feel he was irresponsible to not heal his situation sooner. His crime was letting unhappiness fester until it because an oozing, infected wound the size of an exit-chute. He risked something far greater and graver than anything I can imagine. His own chance at happiness.

So instead of being quirky and awesome, this blog post is heavy and somber. I feel like I heard a joke that everyone rolled over laughing about and deep down I just know it’s not funny. It’s the opposite of funny. It’s scary. I personally think there is nothing more terrifying than being in a situation where you are not happy. So I will say this, disgruntled flight attendant. Thanks for the reminder not to let the wounds of unhappiness go undressed. I hope someone somewhere learns from your lesson and takes a higher less illustrious road to their own joy.

Do you agree? Disagree? Wish you had the guts to do what he did? Or have a story about a more elegant exit strategy? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
