Kony 2012: A Campaign For Change

7 Mar 12

Kony 2012 is an amazingly profound documentary. It brings to light the war crimes of Ugandan Guerilla group leader Joseph Kony. Kony 2012 tells in disturbing detail the story of Kony, and the Invisible Children organization’s plan to take him down.  With social media creating such strong connectivity, the population now has the power to be heard and make change.

The Simplest Way To Sell & Shop

19 Oct 11

Although I understand the wonderful world of Twitter, I would probably have to claim novice over expert. Which is why I find things like this website by Sell Simply even more intriguing. They’ve taken something many people are already comfortable with in the social media scene and twisted it to be something new and useful. Simply put, they “turn Tweets into transactions.”

Not only do they have a new and innovative idea, they’ve created it in a very organized and user friendly environment. They’ve looked at the target, studied how the medium can help them, and implemented it. Plus they are versatile. You can shop via Twitter or their website, and listing can be done with them or imported from other online places. Sellers tweet the item, price and picture for anyone to see, and if you want to make the purchase simply reply all with the word “buy.” And since it’s Twitter you can easily follow sellers you like and search for new listed items.

Indexed: Making Sense By Making Fun

5 Jul 11

Indexed is a great little blog I love and subscribe to. The creator, Jessica Hagy, uses simple charts and graphs to, as she puts it, “…make fun of some things and sense of others. I use it to think a little more relationally without resorting to doing actual math.” Her ideas are thought-provoking—and sometimes just really fun to wake-up to in the morning.

Searching For Insight? Ask Your Facebook Friends.

1 Jun 11

New spots released last week by Crispin Porter + Bogusky feature Bing’s new integrated Facebook technology. Bing’s search engine is now linked to your Facebook and shows recommendations based on what your friends like and dislike. The concept of the quirky new CPB campaign is this – you trust your Facebook friends, so you should trust them to decide everything from where to eat and drink to what music to listen to. The spots are pretty fun other than the unfortunate visual tie to Facebook’s clunky design.

The use of social media within a search engine platform seems to be catching on, with Google responding to Microsoft’s new Facebook feature by introducing their own social integration which will show recommendations from your Gmail contacts and more.

Storify, Social Media And The Stolen Laptop

24 May 11

My new favorite social media discovery is Storify. In their own words: “Storify is a way to tell stories using social media such as Tweets, photos and videos. You search multiple social networks from one place, and then drag individual elements into your story. You can re-order the elements and also add text to give context to your readers.”

So why am I blogging about this today? Because I just had to share with you this Storify.

I felt like I was watching a real time cops and robbers movie and I am simply amazed that all the material is via tweet. Check out the curated story, tweet by tweet, of the guy who used social media to recover his stolen laptop.

Note: Due to the nature of Storify, including actual tweets from real people, you may see some strong language. Parental discretion advised.

Look What I Just Made…

13 May 11

Food photography is no longer left to the Quentin Bacons and Judd Pilossofs of the world. According to Mashable, more and more people are snapping their own creations and posting them on every social media outlet available. I’m one of them and I’m proud to show my work. So why not share it with you and the rest of my 545 “friends?!”

The “Me” in Social Media

8 Apr 11

Check out this great post and its powerful infographic from legendary social media guru Brian Solis and his friends at Jess3. It’s such a clear picture of the kinds of personalities that are participating in social media. According to Solis, these “characteristics of online behavior” are key to understand as we pave the way to “not only gain the “attention” of consumers but “capture their heart and mind.”

The Tsunami, The Internet & Social Media

14 Mar 11

Our hearts go out to those affected by Friday’s tsunami in Japan. As we follow all the media coverage, we are amazed at the role the internet and social media played providing answers and comfort for people all over the world. We found some of these Facebook stories truly inspiring.

Trending Now – Kindness

11 Mar 11

There’s some research floating around out there that indicates doing something nice for someone else makes you feel better than doing something nice for yourself. The writers at one of our favorite trend blogs appear to agree and just published a very comprehensive trend briefing on the topic. Not only do they highlight how brands are helping consumers perform these random acts of kindness, they’ve also identified brands that are leveraging social media to perform small kindnesses for their consumers on a very 1:1 basis. The kindest one (in my humblest of opinions) is the KLM Airlines example but I’d vote with my dollar for just about any one of these brands.

Social Media As A Metaphor

18 Feb 11

Last week I attended a great workshop run by Hans E. Hageman and Associates, a consulting firm that coaches individuals and nonprofits. When I heard the title of the workshop, “Marketing & Fundraising for Individuals and Small Non-profits” I thought of the Dwelling Place of NY. We just designed and launched the new Dwelling Place of NY website and we’re always looking for ways to learn more to help even more.

At the workshop, I heard a great metaphor about social media that really rang true. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do:

Twitter is like a cocktail party.
Facebook is like a friend’s BBQ.
Your blog is like your home.
