Jay-Z’s Vision, Your Voice

11 Nov 10

Thank you Mashable for making me seem much cooler than I really am. If it weren’t for you and your daily dose of late-breaking social media news, I’d be in the dark about the brand new, blindingly brilliant Jay-Z’s Hits Collection site.

You’ll feel like you’ve been transported to New York City through Jay-Z’s eyes. In fact, just being on this site made me feel like a rap star.

The site is divided into four eras, each representing one chapter in the rise of his career. Music from each era leads you through a video journey that leads to more Jay-Z treasures. Check out photos, discography and more. And you can even participate with other fans by sharing memories, reviews and commentary via the Twitter option to “Add Your Voice.”

The site was created by Agency Net along with Island Def Jam based on the insight that “fans love to use social media, particularly Twitter, to post Jay-Z lyrics and illustrate their dexterity.”

Fans also love to feel like they’re in the know. My Jay-Z fan-dom has increased just by being on this site. I’ll be right back, I gotta go Tweet about this.

Time-Lapse Yoga

9 Nov 10

I came across this lovely video and just had to share. Against the rush of New York City and other urban landscapes throughout the world, this yoga-enthused dude, Phillip, performs his practice. His calm, steady practice is a nice contrast to the sped-up blur of passersby. And although I am not in the performing yoga camp, and my own yoga practice differs greatly, I respect the beauty and the intention behind both Philip’s practice and his video. My favorite parts are the reactions of the people who stop to watch the spectacle and the simple and lovely cut at the end…he slows down, reaches the end of his exhale and…cut.

This video is by no means a groundbreaking concept, but it’s a nice way to show the flow of a simple process over the course of many months and many places. It would be fun to see what other videos could come out of a similar pretext…”here I am washing dishes all over the Midwest”…“here I’m running along waterfronts across the Eastern Seaboard”…”oh, and this is me diving for pennies off the coast of Australia. Oops! There’s a shark.” I digress. And I need more time to brainstorm awesome time-lapse video ideas. Won’t you help me? What if Sawtooth made a little time-lapse video all our own. What would you like to see?

Spring Gardening In NYC

12 May 10

As avid Stranger Than Fiction blog readers may know, The Dwelling Place is a transitional shelter for women in New York City that we do a lot of work with. We thought a place as special as The Dwelling Place should look as beautiful on the outside as the spirit of the women on the inside. So a few of us here, Kristi, Sue, Dawn and myself, headed to the city to do a little afternoon Spring gardening. Luckily, we were lead by Sue, the only one among us with any kind of a green thumb. With our gardening gloves on, trowels in hand and Sue in charge, we planted everything from Coleus and Impatiens to Petunias and Lavender.

We hope the flowers grow and bloom in the next few months and bring smiles to the faces of Sister Margaret, Sister Nancy and all the wonderful women of the Dwelling Place.
