Google’s Latest Surprise

19 Dec 11

Type “Let it Snow” in a Google search and you’ll see a snowy surprise on your search results page. It will actually get so white you won’t be able to see anything until you hit “defrost.”

Check out more about this and other Google holiday surprises on Mashable.

Happy Googley YouTubey Halloween

31 Oct 11

Google has officially outdone itself. While they’ve had a long history of quirky and fun Google Doodles for every holiday including Halloween, today’s is more than a Doodle. It’s a time lapse video of their team carving six real larger than life pumpkins into the Halloween-ized Google logo. It’s amazing to see how much time, energy and passion the Google Team put into this. Check out the making of video here.

While the Google Doodle video wins in the awesome department, make sure to check out Mashable’s top 7 spookiest YouTube videos here. Consider yourself warned. They are spooky. You will jump.

What do you love?

30 Jun 11

Google wants to know. And they’re not just asking the question, they’re answering it in a mashed-up multitude of ways that only Google could.

Monday’s Mashable broke the “What do you love?” news before Google even did. It’s one stop access to everything Google offers. Google images, google maps, gmail, Google trends and much more. Your search results comes back to you not in the familiar list of links but in a vibrant and visual framework full of facts, figures, pictures and video that you can see all in one place.

We’re wondering if it’s part of the new Google+ which according to Mashable is Google’s “top secret social layer that turns all of the search engine into one giant social network.”

Check out Google’s ‘What do you love?’ here.

For me, the only question that remains is ‘What’s not to love?’

Food photography is no longer left to the Quentin Bacons and Judd Pilossofs of the world. According to Mashable, more and more people are snapping their own creations and posting them on every social media outlet available. I’m one of them and I’m proud to show my work. So why not share it with you and the rest of my 545 “friends?!”

Leave it to Mashable. Thanks to their recent contest, they’ve taken the mushy out of Valentine’s Day and replaced it with nerdy. Well, #TypeNerdyToMe that is. So here at Stranger than Fiction, we’re celebrating V-Day social-media style by sharing a few of our favorite winners:

Jay-Z’s Vision, Your Voice

11 Nov 10

Thank you Mashable for making me seem much cooler than I really am. If it weren’t for you and your daily dose of late-breaking social media news, I’d be in the dark about the brand new, blindingly brilliant Jay-Z’s Hits Collection site.

You’ll feel like you’ve been transported to New York City through Jay-Z’s eyes. In fact, just being on this site made me feel like a rap star.

The site is divided into four eras, each representing one chapter in the rise of his career. Music from each era leads you through a video journey that leads to more Jay-Z treasures. Check out photos, discography and more. And you can even participate with other fans by sharing memories, reviews and commentary via the Twitter option to “Add Your Voice.”

The site was created by Agency Net along with Island Def Jam based on the insight that “fans love to use social media, particularly Twitter, to post Jay-Z lyrics and illustrate their dexterity.”

Fans also love to feel like they’re in the know. My Jay-Z fan-dom has increased just by being on this site. I’ll be right back, I gotta go Tweet about this.
