How To Make Ideas Happen

20 May 11

We’re fascinated with ideas. Where ideas come from. How to approach thinking to get the freshest ideas. And the power of collaboration and inspiration.

So when we saw this article sharing insights from the 99% Conference: Key Insights on Idea Execution we stopped in our tracks and started reading.

Check out the link for some great highlights of the conference. Some of the bravest, boldest, smartest thinkers out there share honest insights on creativity, accomplishment and overall a “deep dive into the mechanics of making ideas happen.”

For visual learners, there’s even a series of posts dedicated to illustrated conference highlights.

While you’re on the 99% site, scroll to the bottom and look on the left to check out the Thomas Edison quote that inspired their name. So very true. And a great example of an inspiring and intriguing yet powerful name.

The Sawooth Oscar Goes To…

28 Feb 11

The 2011 Oscars have come and gone. Here’s a big Stranger than Fiction shout out to Sawtooth Academy Member Dawn Morris—the one and only ‘tooth to accurately predict all three categories from Friday’s prediction post. Go Dawn!

Before we say goodbye to Academy Award season, we have three Oscar discoveries to share with you:

1. Sawtooth’s own Adria Knapp had a close encounter with a real Oscar this weekend in Grand Central. Thanks for sharing this little slice of Hollywood with us Adria.

2. In the spirit of Stranger than Fiction, we love “MTV’s Oscar Superlatives.” What’s not to love about recapping the big night by celebrating moments like Strangest Standing Ovation and Most Surprisingly Great Speech?

3. We, like most of America, fell in love with God of Love filmmaker Luke Matheny. Check out his acceptance speech for the Academy Award for Best Live-Action Short here. (And if you really wanna tear up, watch this clip of Luke learning his film got nominated.)

We’ll be weaning ourselves off of all the Oscars excitement by checking out the rest of the nominated shorts. We’ve said before that inspiration is everywhere. We are definitely inspired.

So Bad It’s Good

4 May 10

Bad theater makes for good conversation.

Here’s what happened. I saw some bad theater. Not theater that could have gone either way. Not theater that just missed its mark. Not theater whose value was in the eye of the beholder. Just some flat-out very bad theater.

I won’t mention the play I saw or where I saw it. I won’t link to it. Instead, I’d like you to imagine, just for a moment, the worst theater you ever saw. Or, okay, a terrible, terrible movie.

Got something?

So now, here’s the thing. The rub. The catch. You LOVED talking about it didn’t you? You still do! You could sit here and wax poetic about the atrocities of it. A ridiculous plot. Terrible costumes. Painful acting. You could talk about it all day. It was so bad, it was entertaining, wasn’t it?

I’ve been chatting about this very bad play for 3 days now. It’s been an endless fount of inspiration for some of my, shall we say (since you didn’t hear them), very awesome jokes.

When it’s enjoyed in the right lighthearted frame of mind, Bad Stuff is comic relief. And at its best, Bad Stuff can feed us, rev us up artistically by pointing out exactly what we don’t like. Bad Stuff, the alter universe to Good Stuff, makes us consider what we actually do like. It points the way to Good Stuff. Bad Stuff is a beacon, a lighthouse, if you will, of things to avoid avoid.

In that spirit, here are a few favorite Curators of Bad:

Mystery Science Theater 3000: They got the catty calling off to a good start. And they had robots.

Us Magazine Worst Dressed Lists: Because you look at it. Yes you do.

Copyranter: He’s mean. He’s mad. And he takes the “B” from Bad and adds it to Ads.

Regretsy: Come ogle the less than shiny items from the stellar site, Etsy.
