Iconic Advertising, Re-imagined.

29 Mar 12

We recently stumbled upon an amazing work-in-progress by Google. Project Re:Brief aims to re-imagine four classic ads and bring them to life using today’s digital technologies. To date, the project has re-briefed on Coca Cola’s “Hilltop” and Volvo’s “Drive it like you hate it.”

Perhaps one of the most intriguing aspects of this undertaking is that the original creatives responsible for the work are involved in the re-brief. Harvey Gabor and Amir Gargano both admit to their alienation from the latest digital mediums, which pushes the fact that a great strategy is timeless.

I’m personally inspired by the re-imagined work in that it was able to bridge the original brief to where the brand stands today, all while making the messages more personal and emotional through digital targeting, mapping, translating and social capabilities. So take a few minutes (or hours) and enjoy.

Sawtooth Holiday Round-Up

23 Dec 11

With all this talk of holidays and end of the year celebrations, we hope all of you are more prepared than we feel (did someone say last-minute shopping?). For those of you who have a few spare moments before the ball drops for 2012, here’s a holiday round-up of Sawtooth finds from around the office.

A commercial to make you go, “awwww” for the holidays:

The quirky side of gift-giving.

Something (printable & free) for your own gifts.

Don’t forget the food or the drinks.

And a last farewell (Google style) to 2011:

Happy, wonderful, merry and safe holidays to you all. See you next year!

Happy Googley YouTubey Halloween

31 Oct 11

Google has officially outdone itself. While they’ve had a long history of quirky and fun Google Doodles for every holiday including Halloween, today’s is more than a Doodle. It’s a time lapse video of their team carving six real larger than life pumpkins into the Halloween-ized Google logo. It’s amazing to see how much time, energy and passion the Google Team put into this. Check out the making of video here.

While the Google Doodle video wins in the awesome department, make sure to check out Mashable’s top 7 spookiest YouTube videos here. Consider yourself warned. They are spooky. You will jump.

Google Turns Thirteen

27 Sep 11

It’s hard to imagine even one day without Google. In fact, to write this very post, I Googled it. I mean, Google makes us all seem so brilliant and resourceful. It makes us rockstars. We love its ever-growing capabiltities. And we even love to laugh at it. The fact that today is Google’s 13th birthday is a pretty big deal to just about everyone. In honor of this very special occasion, here’s today’s Google doodle.

There have been some pretty awesome Google Birthday Doodles from over the years. To view the rest of them, click here. Now that Google has officially reached 13, it will be amazing to see what Google becomes next.

15 Google Products You May Not Have Heard Of

20 Jul 11

Last month we brought you Google’s very cool “What do you love?” search engine. So today we’re bringing you 15 very dumb Google products. But here’s the twist… they’re all fake… and really funny!

The folks at College Humor took a jab at companies for being prolific about launching pointless products, in this case specifically Google. I guess it’s true that with success comes failure.

Here are the first five in the very creative list of “The 15 Dumbest Google Products (That Don’t Actually Exist Yet)”. Check out all 15 for yourself here.

What do you love?

30 Jun 11

Google wants to know. And they’re not just asking the question, they’re answering it in a mashed-up multitude of ways that only Google could.

Monday’s Mashable broke the “What do you love?” news before Google even did. It’s one stop access to everything Google offers. Google images, google maps, gmail, Google trends and much more. Your search results comes back to you not in the familiar list of links but in a vibrant and visual framework full of facts, figures, pictures and video that you can see all in one place.

We’re wondering if it’s part of the new Google+ which according to Mashable is Google’s “top secret social layer that turns all of the search engine into one giant social network.”

Check out Google’s ‘What do you love?’ here.

For me, the only question that remains is ‘What’s not to love?’

Even Google Thinks I’m A Rock Star

9 Jun 11

Drop whatever you are doing right now and head over to Google. Today’s Google Doodle is a fully functioning (albeit slightly odd-looking) electric guitar. It was done to commemorate what would have been guitar pioneer Les Paul’s 96th birthday (sadly, Mr. Paul passed away in 2009). Strum to your heart’s content, get in touch with your inner rock star and jam. When you’ve got your riff working to maximum awesomeness, it will even allow you to record it and email to your groupies. Rock on!

Searching For Insight? Ask Your Facebook Friends.

1 Jun 11

New spots released last week by Crispin Porter + Bogusky feature Bing’s new integrated Facebook technology. Bing’s search engine is now linked to your Facebook and shows recommendations based on what your friends like and dislike. The concept of the quirky new CPB campaign is this – you trust your Facebook friends, so you should trust them to decide everything from where to eat and drink to what music to listen to. The spots are pretty fun other than the unfortunate visual tie to Facebook’s clunky design.

The use of social media within a search engine platform seems to be catching on, with Google responding to Microsoft’s new Facebook feature by introducing their own social integration which will show recommendations from your Gmail contacts and more.

We Need Your Awesomeness

13 Dec 10

I’m no Google groupie, but when they open with a come on like “We need your awesomeness” I can’t help but stop for a moment and consider a wink in their direction. And it’s not because I think they’re calling me awesome. Well, a little. But what is actually awesome here is how Google has invited users to find innovative ways to use the simple functions provided on a standard search page. Good for Google – the results illustrate the power of these everyday functions we take for granted and remind users that sometimes a tool we see as purely practical can be flipped and used in a really creative and unique way. Good for us – we get entertained and just maybe we get inspired to look at a hammer, toilet paper or our search engine a little differently.

Mom, Please Don’t Read This

18 May 10

My mother is convinced people are reading her email:

My mom: “Michael (that’s what she calls me when she’s mad at me), you don’t think my email is stopping somewhere before it gets to you?”

Me: “Gee, I hope not. Who knows what they’d think of the seventeen items you’ve forwarded me today alone, including the video of the kitten licking the face of the puppy?”

My mom: [Angry silence]

Turns out she was sort of right.

In a New York Times report last Friday, Google admitted to “unknowingly” collecting so-called “payload data” from individuals sending information across password-unprotected networks that Google collects to put together its Street View feature on Google Maps.

This is not going to make my mom very happy. It will go like this:

My mom: “Michael (she’s still mad), I told you they were reading my things. Why don’t you ever listen to me?”

Me: (Long pause, then) Oh @#$*, you were talking to me? I was watching “Glee”. That Jane Lynch is just a hoot. What did you say?”

My mom: [Even angrier silence, lasting probably for at least a week and a half]

Okay, mom, here’s my response. If you are too darn lazy to password-protect your network, you absolutely deserve to get your information “borrowed”. This is not “Big Brother”, it’s just being a doofus. It is not a difficult process (set password, write password on sticky note, tack sticky note to bulletin board for extra protection). So do it and then you don’t have to worry about anyone knowing things about you that you don’t want them to know. And I don’t have to suffer through more conversations with my mother on this topic. Let’s get on this people!
