Inspiration Overload: Johnny Cash Project

19 Nov 10

As we continue our series on some of the truly great and inspiring work from Google Labs that tickles our fancy, I couldn’t help but choose The Johnny Cash Project as my favorite fancy-tickler.

Of course, being a fan of Johnny Cash made this project particularly compelling on a personal level, but what I find most incredible about this effort is the way that it invites all of Mr. Cash’s fans to share an artistic outpouring of devotion to a man they admire – and then uses those submissions to create a beautiful video for Johnny’s final recorded track, “Ain’t No Grave.” The site provides a simple set of drawing tools that allow any user to choose a frame of the video, recreate it in a way that is meaningful to them, and then submit the frame back into the cue for possible inclusion in a future iteration of the video. As there are obviously many versions of each frame provided from fans (over 250,000 frame drawings have been submitted), the video is constantly updated to feature a different selection of user-provided frames – making this video a living, breathing homage to a man who sadly is not here to revel in the results of the inspiration he provided through his music and life.

This kind of collaboration isn’t new by any means, but unique in the sense that the user’s relationship to the project doesn’t end when they click submit. The project doesn’t end when there are drawings for every frame. It doesn’t end when someone managing the project decides they don’t like your drawing. The users contribution lives on. Like the legacy of a boy named Sue. To hear more from some of those inspired fans commenting on their involvement in the project, check this out:

Inspiration Overload: In B Flat

4 Nov 10

In a previous post we revealed a little link that leads to a goldmine of amazing creative work, generously compiled by Google Labs. As promised, today I’ll be the first in a series of Sawteeth sharing favorites from the doc. And trust me, in a body of work with so many insanely smart ideas, it was no easy task choosing just one. After clicking through 106 inspiring things, I fell in love with In B Flat. It rocks.

Conceived by Darren Solomon from Science for Girls, In B Flat is a collaborative music project created from a collection of 20 user-generated YouTube videos. The videos feature people playing different instruments, all in B flat. When played simultaneously, the music samples create beautiful compositions in completely unique variations. The idea is smart, simple, and leaves me somewhat sad, because I didn’t think of it first.

Inspiration Overload

As we all know here in our land of idea-generation, inspiration can come from anywhere. And it helps to be looking, always looking.

Now a little link helps us keep our eyes open. This compilation, “The Creative Internet 106 Things,” was created by Google Labs in the very spirit of Google Labs itself (Adventure! Experimentation! Playtime!).

Many of the featured projects lean on the support of collaborative communities that make the project possible-crowd-sourced video, webcam choreography, interfacing histories with maps. This kind of playful, communal brainstorming and feedback system is just what Google Labs is doing and it reminds me of our own creative process here at Sawtooth. We discover every day (over many collective “aha!” moments) that creativity never comes from a closed system. It always thrives in a network of idea-bouncing, suggestion-giving and mess-making.

So…what shall we make next?

Keep an eye out for upcoming posts where we’ll get different ‘Teeth to weight in on their favorite digital work from this doc.
