Food, I Love You

7 Mar 11

Yes, food. I do love you. Planning dinner while I’m eating lunch type of love. So now I love Foodily, and their tagline, “Food I love you.”

Foodily is a beautifully designed, simple site that pulls every recipe from every website and puts it all in one place for your convenience. You can even check out recipes your foodie friends are cooking and then tell them your favorites through Facebook. Talk about a great way to celebrate food. Which is why it was recently netted by the webby’s.

So, what’ll it be? Gluten Free Bread? Homesick Texan Pickles? Fried Chicken? I don’t know, but now I’m hungry again.

Plenty Of Counter Space At The MOMA

17 Sep 10

Keeping in the spirit of yesterday’s blog, and our favorite subject, food, today we’re celebrating kitchens and cooks.

1926-27 “Frankfurt Kitchen” by Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky

Counter Space: Design and the Modern Kitchen is the newest thing cookin’ at the MOMA right now. Inspired by the museum’s acquisition of a rare example of the iconic 1926 “Frankfurt Kitchen,” the show explores the 20th century evolution of the kitchen that marked a changing society, and new perceptions of women’s domestic roles.

The write-up about Counter Space on MOMA’s website got me thinking about how interesting it is that before Schütte-Lihotzky’s design, the kitchen was the most undesirable room in the house (even hidden from sight in the basement), and now-a-days it’s by far the most popular. And contrary to then, the cook is now the star of the show. If they’re a good cook, anyway. But, I guess people eventually smartened up and realized the kitchen and the cook produced the most important thing – the food.

The exhibit is chock-full of history, politics, innovation and cool stuff to look at. And the MOMA is always a great way to spend an afternoon. You should definitely consider checking it out.

The Right To Deliciousness

20 Aug 10

It was just before lunchtime, so of course I was perusing through one of my many favorite foodie sites. With my stomach growling, I stumbled upon an amazing story featuring renegade baker, Matthew Tilden.

Matthew Tilden is the 27-year-old founder of SCRATCHbread in Brooklyn, which until recently was run out of a pizza restaurant during its off hours. His homespun company just celebrated its first birthday, and since its conception has found success with a loyal cult following. But Matt’s vision has always been much bigger than owning just any old bakery:

“We started this thing with nothing, from scratch…from a frustration, a passion, and need to change a few things about the food we find on our shelves. A good loaf of bread has a lot of strength, and we intend to enhance our community–and then some–simply through the ideal that delicious, wholesome food should be accessible.”

The company has launched a movement called “Right to Deliciousness” in an effort to share their beliefs. I love that Matt is making his products from scratch and commend his passion for creating a healthier, tastier, homemade world. If you’re inspired, you can support his “Right to Deliciousness” campaign and help him get his new Bay Ridge bakery up and running.

A Bunch Of Losers

22 Mar 10

At Sawtooth, we love food. So much so that on January 4th, coming out of our post holiday eating comas, we initiated our third installment of “The Biggest Loser: Sawtooth.” The stakes are much higher this time around…so high that if we aren’t talking about work, we are talking weight-loss strategies for our 12 week competition. Thankfully, the candy that used to be everywhere is now replaced with grapes, bananas and other yummy healthy food.

Our scale here is a little funky and is never consistent, so our rule is you get to use the best of three weights in your Monday weigh-in. Yes, Monday. This way we control ourselves over the weekend (in theory). Here are some other interesting diet tricks amongst the 12 competitors:

• Strip down to the lightest clothes you possibly have for weigh in
• “I can eat anything if it’s before noon.”
• “If you’re hungry, eat an egg.”
• MiraLAX is a miracle maker.

Recently, under the guise of gamesmanship, inter-office mailing of chocolate éclairs has begun. Needless to say, mouths were drooling, but not one was eaten. With just 11 days left until the April 1st final weigh in, we’re all just waiting to see what everyone has up their sleeves to win (for instance, I’ve been denied a personal day 3/31). Check back here 4/1 for the low-down on the final weigh-in!
