Writing On Virtual Walls

9 Mar 12

What happens when you take the interaction of Facebook, combine it with the word count limit of Twitter and then top it off with augmented reality? Wallit. A new, free app released Tuesday that creates virtual walls in physical spaces.

Say you’re in a stadium or out somewhere site seeing, you would launch Wallit and see a radar function indicating that a wall had been created where you are (or point you to where other walls exist). You could then view the wall through your smartphone camera screen to see posts, photos, videos and other “marks” made by people who are there at the same time or got there before you.

The app only allows you to post if you’re actually at the place, but posts can be viewed from anywhere. The cool thing about Wallit is that you physically have to be at the place of interest to actively participate in the conversation. Apparently, Apple thinks it’s pretty cool too. The creator of the Wallit, Veysel Berk, says that Apple is already planning 326 Wallit walls to go up in their stores for the launch of iPad 3, all of which will link to a “Super Wall.” The idea is to get the people waiting in line to talk to one another about the product and their experience.

It’ll be interesting to see if, and how, this technology is implemented in other commercial spaces and if it catches on among users.

Were we naughty? Or were we nice?

21 Dec 11

We must’ve been really good this year because look who showed up at our Holiday Masquerade Party.

He even brought lottery tickets for all of us.

He gave lots of hugs…

He hung out with us in the photo booth for a while…

He recruited some elves…

Then it occurred to Mr. Claus that he was much closer to the beach than the North Pole. So he shed his arctic top…

And hit the dance floor.

He couldn’t stay long because according to Siri he had 3.7 billion appointments to get to.

But wait, it’s not too late to send a personalized call from Santa.

Isn’t it amazing how great Santa is? We could all learn a thing or six from this guy.

Thank you Santa!

Facebook Friendly

Two-way conversations are great. So are memories. That’s why we think it’s great when brands decide to combine the things consumers like with something relevant for their brand. Facebook is a big example of where brands try to connect, but don’t always succeed. Here are some great examples of how brands can use Facebook’s evolution for good.

Lets start with Facebook Timeline. Although it’s official release has been postponed until, well, Facebook is ready, other brands have begun using the memory building idea for their own brands. You know, those times when the little window pops up and lets you choose to allow some other program to access your Facebook page. People like it because with one click they can personalize an experience. Brands like it for exactly the same reason.

One of the craziest, and probably creepiest, examples was when a viral site called “Take This Lollipop” was passed around this Halloween. It linked with your Facebook page and inserted you, via Facebook pictures, as the person of interest for a deranged stalker. It has provoked all sorts of reactions, the best being that it currently has over 11 million Facebook “likes.”

From the Virgin Group we found another, slightly less stalker-feeling activity. They currently have an app that reminds you of your first times with friends. Choose any one of your friends to connect with and Virgin brings up all the firsts you’ve had with them on Facebook.

The great thing about this app is that has more than a one-time use, keeping Virgin in a longer conversation. Every friend you pick brings up a new combination of “firsts” (although, in an effort to have a more productive work day we suggest you don’t try the app with every one of your Facebook friends – as we may or may not have experience with).

And then there’s Patron. Their app for Ultimat Vodka calculates your “social score” by evaluating things like how many “likes” your check-ins have or the amount of pictures people are fake-smiling in. Funny to try and a clever way to connect your online life with your real life. Because we all know that online photos aren’t buying Patron’s Ultimat Vodka.

Coffee Lovers, Rejoice!

11 Aug 11

One super generous, totally random dude named Jonathan Stark wants to make sure our coffee cups are always full. So he created a site called Jonathan’s Card where we can snap a pic of his Starbucks gift card with our smart phones, scan it at any Starbucks location and get a free cup of Joe.

Jonathan Stark, and Starbucks reps alike, claim Stark’s “pay it forward” project is not some kind of underground advertising to pump Starbucks coffee. Stark has told reporters his motivation to create this caffeinated campaign was simply because he thought it would be fun and he feels in the future this same idea could be translated into setting up donations for “someone in a more desperate situation than the average person in line at Starbucks.”

Jonathan’s Card has certainly caught on. In mid July he set up the card with $300 out of pocket. To date the card has reached a total of $8,700. It’s balance has been upped more than 500 times and it’s been withdrawn close to 900 times. Since the start of this project Stark has gained about 10,000 followers on Twitter and 3,000 Facebook fans. These numbers just go to show how powerful social media marketing done right can be. Talk about a win, win for coffee junkies and Jonathan Stark.

Searching For Insight? Ask Your Facebook Friends.

1 Jun 11

New spots released last week by Crispin Porter + Bogusky feature Bing’s new integrated Facebook technology. Bing’s search engine is now linked to your Facebook and shows recommendations based on what your friends like and dislike. The concept of the quirky new CPB campaign is this – you trust your Facebook friends, so you should trust them to decide everything from where to eat and drink to what music to listen to. The spots are pretty fun other than the unfortunate visual tie to Facebook’s clunky design.

The use of social media within a search engine platform seems to be catching on, with Google responding to Microsoft’s new Facebook feature by introducing their own social integration which will show recommendations from your Gmail contacts and more.

The Search For Pop Chips VP

16 Mar 11

I love me a good crowdsourcing effort. A chance when a brand runs a contest to make a person’s dreams come true. Something that’s inspiring. Something that has a prize. Something involving Ashton Kutcher.

Months ago, we gave a shoutout to Ashton Kutcher on Twitter when he was declared the President of Pop Culture by a favorite Sawtooth brand – Pop Chips (and he tweeted back to us!!!!). Well the search has been on to find his Vice President. And it could be any of us! It’s now down to 5 finalists, who submitted videos online declaring their candidacy. Here’s the video that kicked it all off.

I, Alyson Goode – Senior Account Executive at The Sawtooth Group, was tempted to submit a video to become AK’s VP to this Facebook-run campaign. But then I realized, perhaps I am not cool enough to keep up with Ashton’s PUNK’d awesomeness. I salute those who have made it to the final 5, and can’t wait to see who is voted to this prestigious position. I am voting for Diane Mizota!

The Tsunami, The Internet & Social Media

14 Mar 11

Our hearts go out to those affected by Friday’s tsunami in Japan. As we follow all the media coverage, we are amazed at the role the internet and social media played providing answers and comfort for people all over the world. We found some of these Facebook stories truly inspiring.

Food, I Love You

7 Mar 11

Yes, food. I do love you. Planning dinner while I’m eating lunch type of love. So now I love Foodily, and their tagline, “Food I love you.”

Foodily is a beautifully designed, simple site that pulls every recipe from every website and puts it all in one place for your convenience. You can even check out recipes your foodie friends are cooking and then tell them your favorites through Facebook. Talk about a great way to celebrate food. Which is why it was recently netted by the webby’s.

So, what’ll it be? Gluten Free Bread? Homesick Texan Pickles? Fried Chicken? I don’t know, but now I’m hungry again.

HEY YOU! Designer And Artist!

2 Mar 11

We got an awesome email this morning from our friends at Print for Change. We just had to share in hopes that many of you will consider participating in this important project.

This past March, 6 friends under the name of Le Sét traveled to Haiti to volunteer with the Healing Haiti Foundation and Print for Change with the intent to use our artistic talents to force people to take a new look at the reality of post-earthquake Haiti, with the goal of selling our work to support healinghaiti.org, and inspiring people to get involved in Healing Haiti now.

We delivered food and water, and even had the opportunity to share a fun day of art and play with Haitian Orphans. Our mission is far from over and we ask for a small amount of your time and talent.

In the mid-90’s, UN peacekeeping troops distributed treats to hungry Haitian kids, encouraging the children to shout: “Hey You! Give me chocolate!” as they did. Now, more than a decade later, the phrase has been passed down, and butchered in translation, with the “give me” being discarded altogether. The result is a generation of Haitian children who think “Hey You!” means “Give Me!” Today, in this time of extreme need, the cries of “Hey You! Chocolate!” “Hey You! Dollar!” and “Hey You! Shoes!” fill the streets of this ravaged country, forming the sad soundtrack to daily Haitian life. Now more than ever, the people of Haiti need our love and support. HEY YOU! HELP!

We’ve named and branded our Project and Mission HEY YOU! And we’d like to include your artistic interpretation of these words. Since Hey You! is many voices of an entire country and it’s youth, we want to see those voices individually interpreted. Your work will be included in the show as a poster and in a collective book of photos, journals, and art, which will be published in early fall. We ask that you submit your work by MARCH 11th as an Abobe Illustrator file or a Photoshop file at 300 dpi. Max size of work should be 5” x 5.”

For information and insight into our project please visit our website and join us on Facebook.

Your Favorite Celebrity Is Dead For A Cause

2 Dec 10

Kim Kardashian, Justin Timberlake, Alicia Keys, Ryan Seacrest… they’re all dead. Digitally dead that is.

In honor of World AIDS Day, your favorite celebrities have sacrificed their Twitter and Facebook accounts until their fans raise enough money, to the tune of a million dollars each, to bring them back to life. What a great way to leverage social media to rally awareness and support for families affected by HIV and AIDS.
