Don Draper Shows Up For Bill Bernbach’s 100th Birthday

19 Aug 11

Last Saturday would have marked the 100th birthday of advertising legend, Bill Bernbach. Bernbach is known for leading the creative revolution that changed the world of communications forever. He believed that the secret to successful advertising was art over science stating, “The difference between the forgettable and the enduring is artistry.” Some of his most notable campaigns included Volkswagon’s “Think Small,” Avis “We Try Harder” and Life Cereal’s “Mikey” TV spots.

This week in celebration of Bill Bernbach, the agency he founded, DDB, released a video of his most famous work. They even got Don Draper to wish him a happy birthday in an Adweek ad. Happy 100th, Bill!

HEY YOU! Designer And Artist!

2 Mar 11

We got an awesome email this morning from our friends at Print for Change. We just had to share in hopes that many of you will consider participating in this important project.

This past March, 6 friends under the name of Le Sét traveled to Haiti to volunteer with the Healing Haiti Foundation and Print for Change with the intent to use our artistic talents to force people to take a new look at the reality of post-earthquake Haiti, with the goal of selling our work to support healinghaiti.org, and inspiring people to get involved in Healing Haiti now.

We delivered food and water, and even had the opportunity to share a fun day of art and play with Haitian Orphans. Our mission is far from over and we ask for a small amount of your time and talent.

In the mid-90’s, UN peacekeeping troops distributed treats to hungry Haitian kids, encouraging the children to shout: “Hey You! Give me chocolate!” as they did. Now, more than a decade later, the phrase has been passed down, and butchered in translation, with the “give me” being discarded altogether. The result is a generation of Haitian children who think “Hey You!” means “Give Me!” Today, in this time of extreme need, the cries of “Hey You! Chocolate!” “Hey You! Dollar!” and “Hey You! Shoes!” fill the streets of this ravaged country, forming the sad soundtrack to daily Haitian life. Now more than ever, the people of Haiti need our love and support. HEY YOU! HELP!

We’ve named and branded our Project and Mission HEY YOU! And we’d like to include your artistic interpretation of these words. Since Hey You! is many voices of an entire country and it’s youth, we want to see those voices individually interpreted. Your work will be included in the show as a poster and in a collective book of photos, journals, and art, which will be published in early fall. We ask that you submit your work by MARCH 11th as an Abobe Illustrator file or a Photoshop file at 300 dpi. Max size of work should be 5” x 5.”

For information and insight into our project please visit our website and join us on Facebook.

We’re always on the lookout for good advertising. We also find it interesting when someone turns lousy advertising into art.

The Power (And Permanence) Of Type

14 Jul 10

I’ve recently been doing some extensive research (obsessive googling) for a new tattoo and came across an article celebrating Ina Saltz’s second book in a series documenting typographic tattoos.

Typography is an everyday topic in the world of advertising and design. So, I found her exploration of its increasing occurrence in popular culture, and the everyday world of tattooing, interesting.

Both of her books, Body Type 1: Intimate Messages Etched in Flesh and Body Type 2: More Typographic Tattoos, pay homage to the letterform and the power of words by showcasing beautiful photographs of type inspired tattoos. Ina also includes the personal meanings they have for people who wear them, which makes you appreciate the art even more.

From a symmetrical ambigram symbolizing “balance,” to bold font names representing the “type nerd” inside, the books are a cool look at all the people using typography to decorate their bodies.

Though this inspirational ink had me momentarily second-guessing my own design, I think I’ll save the type for some other time. Check out more previews of Body Type 1 & 2.
